Day 3 - Hanoi

Cho Dang Xuan market
A free day. We woke too late for Tai Chi, so after breakfast decided to walk to Cho Dang Xuan (market) then to the Green Tangerine via the shops. Well we got to the markets which were HOT, PACKED and HUMID!!!! 3 levels of closely packed stalls selling everything portable - food, clothes, shoes, utensils, fabrics and electricals. Paddys Market without the passageways - just enough room to squeeze through & shopkeepers literally sitting on top of their goods.

We cruised the shops and eventually got our first cyclos to the Green Tangerine for what turned out to be an excellent lunch. It had a very good & interesting menu - we had delicious fried whitebait with lime-dressed salad & beef and tamarind carpaccio.

Examples of the tall and narrow buildings
We had time to also examine the local architecture. Interestingly, frontages can be very narrow, even in rural areas, but properties can be very deep, and there seems to be little limit on height. Consequently there are many narrow and high buildings which makes for an interesting streetscape.

Later that night we caught taxis to and from the Emperor for dinner which was a recommended restaurant. The surroundings and service were luxurious, but it cost us AUS$100, half of that being spent on Moet et Chandon champagne. The food was OK, but according to Frances, Ric got a bit tipsy & cranky.
